Knowing what's important is key to decision making

  • Whether you are satisficing or maximizing making decisions comes down to finding out what it is you want. Even the decision whether to satisfice or maximize is a call about what’s important to you.
    • You can maximize things that don’t conflict and have to satisfize everything else
  • Questions can be framed differently:
    • Focusing on the goal: What is the optimal governance system? See Take a snapshot with your mental camera for effective goal setting
    • Focusing on the process: How can I make this existing system better?
  • Because we are human we don’t always know what we want. A common example is maximizing things like income or status that will never lead to the desired results (happiness) alone. Herzberg’s Motivation-Hygiene Theory
